There are giant mats of plastic in the Pacific ocean. It extends from 500 mile of the US Pacific coast to Japan.  These mats of soup are killing the oceans creatures and who knows what other effect.

1 ton of silica sand produces as much electricity as 500,000 tons of coal.

That is 1 to 500,000. But that is not the entire picture. The further away the source of the electrical production the more electricity that is lost to resistance in the line. The average line loss for high voltage lines is 50% to 150% . So that coal takes twice as much energy to make the same amount of electricity as the 1 ton of silica, that equals 1ton as compared to on to two million tons! Tons that need to be dug up, release carbon dioxide, be stored and have a waste products. Those waste products  caused the worst US environmental disaster ever. www.nytimes.com/2008/12/27/us/27sludge.html . This is just one of many, many problems with coal. China is putting a coal plant online every week, 52 a year.

Reasons to take action

The main thing we need to remember is that there are 6 plus billion of us. Every time we throw away a cup or have a negative impact it is reproduced by at least 300,000,000 in the United States alone, and we are only 4% of the earth population! We in the United States use  more resources per capita then any other country, Some times as much as one hundred times that of the rest of the world. The good news is that we can solve most of the issues now and stimulate the economy and make money doing it.
