Using the sun to heat water is a natural. It has been doing that ever since the two have been in existence. It is also extremely cost effective to do. There are two basic types of systems and several variations of the two. One type is called open which refers to the fact that the collector and the water that is to be heated and used are the same. The second system is closed and it separates the heated liquid and the water to be used. The second variation is if the liquid is pumped or uses convection to circulate the liquid through the collector. Both systems can be used for pools or domestic water.
